There it was, 11pm, and what was I doing? Preparing chocolate chip cookies in my kitchen as a surprise for my children at school the next day.
Inside their already-made lunches I had planned to sneak attack them, by way of a cookie or two, inserted carefully with a little note, expressing how much I love them.
It’s tiny things like that, imagining the smiles on their faces when they discover what I’ve done, that make the world go ’round. Not the Grammies. Not the A-Rod Steroid Fiasco. Not anything else. Just this.
Just scraping these ooey cookies off of my cookie stones, cooling them onto a plate, surreptitiously packaging them into my children’s lunchboxes (but not before sampling one or two for myself) and slipping under the covers, smiling myself to sleep.
Baking cookies for my cookies. Life can’t get any better than that.
