I haaaaaate going to the doctor. Heck, I hate going to the dentist, too. Let me be clear here – it isn’t that I hate them necessarily, but I hate VISITING them, because it never seems just like one visit. They’re like Gremlins, their visits multiply for whatever reason. I’ve also had some pretty miserable experiences with doctors who wouldn’t listen to me, where visits end up becoming a multiple-type thing and I have to keep going back until somebody finally acknowledges us. Kinda like children who doesn’t listen the first few times you say something. This makes me a very unhappy camper. *side eye*
I’ve battled with entirely too many doctors before – not just for myself but for my children. (“No, Mrs. Douglas, I don’t think your child has strep, but I’ll swab to be on the safe side” – rapid strep comes back POSITIVE.) Recently, I’ve been battling my own doctor for the past 10 months about a few things going on that lead me to believe I have hypothyroidism. Initially, I thought I was going through perimenopause, or something, but my symptoms along with lab tests indicate otherwise, and we just don’t see eye to eye. My doctor is the type of doctor that just treats the symptoms without looking at everything on a whole that might indicate something more. Upon doing my due diligence with research, I’ve discovered that this is an easily misdiagnosed condition. It took me nine months battling my clinic to finally get them to refer me to an endocrinologist only to discover it’s still going to be another three months until I actually SEE the endocrinologist because they’re THAT backed up. I’m not really feeling the love from my military clinic right now. *more side eye*
When Amwell reached out to me and asked if I might try their service, I jumped at the chance. I haven’t been back to my doctor’s office since the day they gave me my referral (can you blame me?) and I wanted some insight on things I could be doing to help myself while waiting for my endocrinology appointment. Currently, I’m using essential oils and supplements, but could I be doing something more?

I used that coupon code to have a one-on-one with one of Amwell’s physicians, and I was thrilled to have instant access to discuss my current health needs. They entire system was very thorough. I had a recent health record downloaded from my provider’s website already (for my endocrinology consult), and I was able to easily upload that for her to peruse to get a better idea of my situation with recent lab results, too.
She was kind, knowledgeable, and eager to help answer my questions during our session together. After battling the past year with our Army doctors here, it was nice to pick and choose which provider to see. Plus, she wasn’t rushed for time as regular doctors usually are, so she took the time to really listen to my concerns, go over lab results, and share her thoughts on what’s going on. She also gave me a downloadable copy of my visit at the conclusion. This can be printed off to be shared with your Primary Care Physician and added to your normal medical record. It briefly states what you were seen for and has helpful information attached about your visit.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Amwell physicians can and will assist you with more than just minor illnesses, injuries, general health and wellness concerns, but they will provide you with prescription refills, too! If you can’t get a hold of your doctor to get a new script refilled or prescribed, they can do it for you! You set up your pharmacy from the start of the consultation, so that info is available to them right away. Also, if you have a chronic condition that requires management, they have specialists that are available, too. In addition to primary care physicians and pediatricians, they also have licensed behavioral therapists and registered dietitians to assist you with those health and wellness needs, too.
I had a great doctor’s visit, and I never even left my house! Haha! No wrangling kids to the doctor’s office, no battling traffic or uncomfortable waiting room chairs, either! I was seen from the comforts of my own home, woohoo!
