Bubblegum Cupcakes Recipe
For this Bubblegum Cupcakes recipe, I used pearlesque bubblegum gumballs in pink and blue to match the icing. I think the shine on the gumballs really adds to the special quality these cupcakes have, you know? They look like they came from a fancy bakery and yet they are homemade! Add a little flair and spring for the shiny gumballs for this recipe, you won’t be sorry!
Ombre Icing for Bubblegum Cupcakes
I absolutely had to go with ombre icing for these Bubblegum Cupcakes. HAD. TO. It’s a technique I’d been wanting to implement on cupcakes for a while now, and I figured “Why not?” with these. That’s the beauty part, these don’t have to be exact, the fun and whimsy of these being almost tie-dyed and matching but each unique is part of what makes these cupcakes so incredibly special to me!
How to Decorate Bubblegum Cupcakes
The key to this Bubblegum Cupcake recipe is the homemade buttercream icing which is absolutely perfect to pipe frosting onto cupcakes, cakes, and more! This perfectly piped buttercream is imperative to the bubblegum design. You can’t miss when you make the buttercream yourself because you get the perfect consistency you need in order to design cupcakes, you know? Store bought would work here too if you need to do this in a pinch, though.
Bubblegum Cupcakes with Ombre Icing
To make these cupcakes, we could’ve alternated the pink and the blue icing on ’em, but I truly felt ombre icing for these adorable cupcakes was the best bet. Ombre icing can be intimidating if you’ve never done it before, but it really and truly is as easy as it is breathtaking, I promise you! Look at how unique each one is, how the pink and blue swirl and almost make purple on a few of ’em! So good, friends!
How to Make Ombre Icing for Bubblegum Cupcakes
There isn’t anything to achieve perfect ombre icing for these Bubblegum Cupcakes – just be sure to put both colors of icing in the same frosting bag but on either sides of the bag before smooshing it down to decorate. Yes, it really is that easy! They will pipe onto the cupcakes as you see them shown ere – with lovely ombre fading, almost like tie-dye! Some cupcakes will get more of one color depending but they are swirled, ombre, fading, and perfectly imperfect!
How to Make Bubblegum Cupcakes
To make these gorgeously simple Bubblegum Cupcakes, you will need the following ingredients:
- Funfetti cupcakes, baked and cooled
- Softened butter
- Confectioners’ sugar
- Milk
- Red gel food coloring
- Blue gel food coloring
- Pink bubblegum candies
- Blue bubblegum candies
You will also need the following tools:
- Wire rack to cool the cupcakes
- Rubber spatula
- Frosting bag
- Wilton Star Tip
Before starting the decorating cupcakes, ensure that all of them are cool on a wire rack.
In a large bowl, beat together butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk with an electric mixer. Start on slow and then gradually increase to high. Your buttercream is ready once all the ingredients are smooth and form semi-stiff peaks. Divide the buttercream into two bowls. Add red gel food coloring to one and blue gel food coloring to the other. Mix until buttercream is completely tinted.
Scoop both buttercreams into a frosting bag using a rubber spatula with the Wilton star tip attached. Keep each color on their own sides in the frosting bag.
Using the Wilton Star Tip, frost each cupcake, starting in the center.
Start in the center, frost in a circle outward, then build upward in a cone shape to swirl to a slight point.
Top with one bubblegum candy on each cupcake.
These are ready to serve and enjoy!
